Significance: Makar Sankranti is celebrated on 14th January every year. This also marks the termination of the Winter season and the beginning of a new harvest season. It is dedicated to Lord Sun and also, refers to a specific solar day in the Hindu calendar. On this auspicious day, the sun enters the zodiac sign of Capricorn or Makar which marks the end of winter months and the start of longer days. From the day of Makar Sankranti, the sun begins its northward journey or “Uttarayan” journey. Therefore, this festival is also known as “Uttarayan”. Makar Sankranti is celebrated with different names across India such as “Lohri” in Punjab & Haryana and “Kite Festival” in Gujarat, though the Kite flying festival is celebrated worldwide nowadays.

Ritual of the Day: As it is celebrated with different names and ways across India, the most predominant is Flying Kites and having a Kite flying competition with other flyers. Also, Sweets are distributed among family and friends with the tagline “Eat Sweet things and Say sweet things”.
